Canada reaches two million .CA Internet domain name registries

The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA) announced Thursday that Canada has reached its two millionth .CA registration. This makes Canada the fourth fastest-growing Internet domain name and 14th largest.
It took 21 years to generate one million .CA Internet domain name registrations. It took only four years to reach two million. This is transpiring as many .CA domain names are being registered for both private and business use.


The latest .CA registration came from Leora Rissin, a retired schoolteacher from Toronto, Ontario, who created algonquinhouse.ca for a new bed and breakfast small business located near High Park.


It was nearly 25 years ago when the .CA domain name was established by University of British Columbia volunteers, which then became the CIRA 13 years later. The very first .CA domain name was set up in 1988 by the University of Prince Edward Island that had upei.ca.


?When we started the .CA domain there were only a few thousand computers on the Internet - in total - and no one thought it would ever be so pervasive,? said John Demco, the team leader responsible for the 1987 .CA foundation, in a news release.


?Now Canada leads the world in the amount of time its citizens spend online, and while the Internet from a technology perspective doesn't concern itself with nationality, Canadians strongly identify with.CA domain names and the registration of two million .CAs is proof of that.?

Pigeon Code Baffles British Cryptographers

A chimney in a home in Surrey, England, was found in 1982 to hold the remains of a carrier pigeon bearing a World War II coded message. An effort is now under way to find out what it says.

They have eavesdropped on the enemy for decades, tracking messages from Hitler?s high command and the Soviet K.G.B. and on to the murky, modern world of satellites and cyberspace. But a lowly and yet mysterious carrier pigeon may have them baffled.

Britain?s code-breakers acknowledged on Friday that an encrypted handwritten message from World War II, found on the leg of a long-dead carrier pigeon in a household chimney in southern England, has thwarted all their efforts to decode it since it was sent to them last month.

As the bird?s story made headlines, pigeon specialists said they believed it may have been flying home from British units in France at around the time of the D-Day Normandy landings in 1944 when it somehow expired in the chimney at the 17th-century home where it was found in the village of Bletchingley, south of London.

After sustained pressure from pigeon-fanciers, the Britain?s GCHQ code-breaking and communications interception unit in Gloucestershire agreed to try to crack the code. But on Friday the secretive organization, whose initials stand for Government Communications Headquarters, acknowledged that it had been unable to do so.

?The sorts of code that were constructed during operations were designed only to be able to be read by the senders and the recipients,? a historian at GCHQ told the British Broadcasting Corporation.

?Unless we get rather more idea than we have about who sent this message and who it was sent to, we are not going to be able to find out what the underlying code was,? said the historian, who was identified only as Tony under GCHQ?s secrecy protocols.

Code-breakers, he said, believed that there could be two possibilities about the encryption of the message, both of them requiring greater knowledge about the identity of those who devised or used the code.

One possibility, he said, was that it was based on a so-called onetime pad that uses a random set of letters, known only to the sender and the recipient, to convert plain text into code and is then destroyed.

?If it?s only used once and it?s properly random, and it?s properly guarded by the sender and the recipient, it?s unbreakable,? the historian said.

Alternatively, if the message was based on a code book designed specifically for a single operation or mission, GCHQ code-breakers were ?unlikely? to crack it, Tony said. ?These codes are not designed to be casually or easily broken,? he said.

The pigeon?s skeleton was initially found by David Martin, a now-retired probation officer at his home in Bletchingley, when he was cleaning out a chimney as part of a renovation. The message, identifying the pigeon by the code name 40TW194, had been folded into a small scarlet capsule attached to its leg.

?Without access to the relevant codebooks and details of any additional encryption used, it will remain impossible to decrypt,? GCHQ said in a news release. ?Although it is disappointing that we cannot yet read the message brought back by a brave carrier pigeon, it is a tribute to the skills of the wartime code-makers that, despite working under severe pressure, they devised a code that was undecipherable both then and now.?

Mr. Martin said he was skeptical of the idea that GCHQ had been unable to crack the code. ?I think there?s something about that message that is either sensitive or does not reflect well? on British special forces operating behind enemy lines in wartime France, he said in a telephone interview. ?I?m convinced that it?s an important message and a secret message.?

There was some indication on Friday, though, that GCHQ was not taking 40TW194?s code as seriously as, say, tracking satellite phone communications between militants in the Hindu Kush.

One of the most ?helpful? ideas about the code, according to Tony, the GCHQ historian, had come from an unidentified member of the public who suggested that, with Christmas looming and thoughts turning, in the West at least, to a red-robed, white-bearded, reindeer-drawn bearer of gifts skilled at accessing homes through their chimneys, the first two words of the message might be ?Dear Santa.?

Ever wondered who is living in your gut, and what they're doing? The trillions of microbial partners in and on our bodies outnumber our own cells by as many as 10 to 1 and do all sorts of important jobs, from helping digest the food we eat this Thanksgiving to building up our immune systems.

In association with the Human Food Project, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder along with researchers at other institutions around the world are launching a new open-access project known as "American Gut" in which participants can get involved in finding out what microbes are in their own guts and what they are doing in there.

The project builds on previous efforts, including the five-year, $173-million NIH-funded Human Microbiome Project, to characterize the microbes living in and on our bodies, said Associate Professor Rob Knight of CU-Boulder's BioFrontiers Institute. But unlike other projects that have focused on carefully chosen test subjects with a few hundred people, this project allows the public to get involved and is encouraging tens of thousands of people to do so, Knight said.

"Galileo saw outer space through his telescope, and we want to see the inner space of your gut through modern genetics," said Rob Dunn, a scientist at North Carolina State University and a collaborator on the project. The new project will be "crowd-funded" by individuals interested in learning more about their own gut bacteria and by others who simply want to contribute to the project, said Dunn.

"By combining the crowd-funding model with the open-access data analysis model that we pioneered with the Earth Microbiome Project, we can finally give anyone with an interest in his or her microbiome an opportunity to participate, whether by contributing samples or by looking at the data," said Knight, also a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Early Career Scientist.

Public interest is immense, says the research team. 18,000 people have already signed up to receive more information by email about the project when it launches. "The American Gut project builds on the Human Microbiome Project by allowing anyone to participate, and will let the public join in the excitement of this new field," said Lita Proctor, program director for the Human Microbiome Project. "We can expect this to lay the groundwork for all sorts of fascinating studies in the future, that others will in turn build on."

The American Gut project is an opportunity for the "citizen scientists" working with team of leading researchers and labs throughout the United States to help shape a new way of understanding how diet and lifestyle may contribute to human health through each person's suite of trillions of tiny microbes, say the researchers. A key aspect of the project is to understand how diet and lifestyle, whether by choice -- like athletes or vegetarians -- or by necessity, including those suffering from particular autoimmune diseases or who have food allergies, affect peoples' microbial makeup, said Knight.

"This will be the first project of its kind that might be able to address this question at such a large scale," said Jeff Leach, founder of the Human Food Project and co-founder of American Gut. The gut microbiome has been linked to many diseases, including obesity, cancer, and inflammatory bowel disease -- all of which are much more common in Western populations, he said.

"We should start thinking about diets not only from the perspective of what we should eat, but what we should be feeding our entire gut microbial systems," said Leach. A key aspect of the project is to integrate studies of Americans of all shapes and sizes with studies of people living more traditional lifestyles in Africa, South America and elsewhere, he said.

The steep decline in the cost of DNA sequencing and recent advances in computational techniques allow for the analysis of microbial genomes orders of magnitude cheaper than was possible only a few years ago, said Knight. Sequencing is now getting cheap enough -- participants who donate $99 or more can expect to get tens of thousands of sequences from microbes in their gut -- that participants can include their families and even their pets, Knight said.

Doctoral student Daniel McDonald is one of several CU-Boulder students who will be involved in the effort. "I am excited to have the opportunity to develop new computational tools in order to further explore this frontier," said McDonald, who is in the Interdisciplinary Quantitative Biology program at the BioFrontiers Institute.

"I am pleased to participate in this pioneering effort that marries the vast interest of the public in science with questions that are worth answering about human health and nutrition," said Martin Blaser, chair of the Department of Medicine and professor of microbiology at New York University. "Through this consortium, the technical and intellectual resources are there to lead to important new knowledge."

The project will seek to build on a growing canine and feline database as well. "The majority of data we currently have on the dog and cat microbiomes has come from a handful of small studies in research or clinically ill animals," said Associate Professor Kelly Swanson of the Department of Animal Sciences and Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "This study will apply the technology to free-living pets, where diet, genetics, and living environment are quite different from household to household.

"This research may identify important trends not possible with lab-based studies, and help guide us on how to feed our pets in the future," said Swanson.

The backdrop to the project is the radical decline in the cost of DNA sequencing, which allows analysis of microbial genomes orders of magnitude cheaper than was possible only a few years ago, and recent advances in computational techniques. Participants in the project include many of the key players in the Human Microbiome Project and research facilities around the world.

"Through this consortium, the technical and intellectual resources are there to lead to important new knowledge."

The project will seek to build on a growing canine and feline database as well. "The majority of data we currently have on the dog and cat microbiomes has come from a handful of small studies in research or clinically ill animals," said Associate Professor Kelly Swanson of the Department of Animal Sciences and Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "This study will apply the technology to free-living pets, where diet, genetics, and living environment are quite different from household to household.

"This research may identify important trends not possible with lab-based studies, and help guide us on how to feed our pets in the future," said Swanson.

The backdrop to the project is the radical decline in the cost of DNA sequencing, which allows analysis of microbial genomes orders of magnitude cheaper than was possible only a few years ago, and recent advances in computational techniques. Participants in the project include many of the key players in the Human Microbiome Project and research facilities around the world.

Apple's 'Spaceship' Campus Might Not Be Finished Until 2016 [REPORT]

Apple?s updated plans for its cutting-edge Apple Campus 2 design show four levels of offices, sprawling landscape, a cafeteria, corporate auditorium and a fitness center. The design shape is still the same as it was initially proposed back in June, with a sleek, circular main building and glass surrounding the exterior.

According to an updated proposal that Apple submitted to the city of Cupertino on Nov. 14, the company's new futuristic headquarters might not be completed until 2016, Bloomberg reports.

Apple originally wanted to start building in 2013 and relocate in 2015; but based on the new timetable, it will more likely break ground on the site in 2014.

Apple seems to be at fault for the delay, as the company said in August that it would file an updated proposal in September, but only did so in November.

If local residents don't file any legal challenges, and if city council quickly approves the project, however, breaking ground in 2013 is still an option, according to David Brandt, Cupertino?s city manager.

The project, originally announced by late Apple founder Steve Jobs last June, hasn't changed much in the updated proposal, the report says.

The 2.8-million-square-foot building will include a huge fitness center and 10,500 parking spots; it will also be surrounded by 7,000 trees.

Augment the reality of holiday shopping with these Android apps

The holiday season is a joyous time of year, but also the most stressful. Between travel, coordinating family and friends, and shopping for gifts, the holidays can feel like more trouble than they?re worth. And while technology can?t always save you from awkward moments at the family dinner, it can help you stay on track while shopping for gifts (or for yourself) this year. Augmented reality is one technology that?s particularly promising for the retail sector, especially as local search becomes a heavily contextualized way for businesses to cater to their customers.

An extension of Amazon?s mobile retail efforts, Flow for Android is an augmented reality app that lets you research products without the hassle of snapping a photo. With Flow you can identify ?tens of millions of products,? from DVDs to books, food and packaged household items. Just aim your smartphone camera at the item and Amazon will recognize it (if it?s available on Amazon.com), overlaying product information on your screen. Use your Android camera to scan catalog pages, gaining access to additional content like images, films and 3D models. Saving you time (and gas money), IKEA Catalogue makes great use of AR capabilities.

Navigating your way around downtown?s shopping district? Layar?s Android app creates a layer of augmented reality to enhance your surroundings, displaying links, videos and other interactive features to learn more about nearby objects and venues. While Layar has a bevy of real-world applications, shoppers will find the navigation features useful for tracking down banks and ATMs, retailers and good restaurants where you can rest your weary feet and re-up on carbs and caffeine. You?ll also be able to pull up local ads to see what promotions nearby venues are running, helping you save money in the end.

While Layar provides a range of AR features, VouchAR is specific for local deals. Use your phone as a ?magic window? to a world of deals, vouchers, coupons and other specials for retailers in your vicinity. Pulling from several deal providers including Groupon, VouchAR is a personalized app that learns your taste over time and displays deals accordingly. Deals are also social, so you can share them on Facebook, Twitter and Google. If you?re a social shopper and a savvy spender, this app could help you find the right gifts for friends and family, and save money this holiday season.

There?s nothing worse than wandering the rows of a parking lot, arms laden with shopping bags, in search of your car. So while you?re using all these AR apps to help you shop, why not use AR to keep track of your car? Save your parking location automatically and use an augmented reality map to find your way back with either driving or walking directions. Car Finder AR supports up to three cars, and you can even send a car?s parked location to other phones. Mobile telephone operators should verify the age of children and youngsters when they access multimedia services by having a record of users' dates of birth. This is one of the recommendations in a report by researchers from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain), that also suggest content classifications for mobiles by age, like in the case of video games.

"Verification of age upon access to mobile phone services is not effective because the child can also falsify their age by checking a different box," as explained to SINC by Mara de Miguel Molina, lecturer at the Polytechnic University of Valencia.

"However, operators could be made aware of the age of their young users if their parents were to disclose such information when purchasing a mobile phone for their child. This information could then be registered," adds the researcher, who headed the study on mobile services aimed at children in Spain.

Published in the 'Quality & Quantity' journal, the report outlines that if this measure were adopted, access to adult sites or those not suitable for minors could be filtered or blocked. This would mean common regulations for operators.

The majority of companies currently operating in Spain have signed the self-regulation code of the Spanish Mobile Operators Association, AESAM, which supports "responsible access" to content. Even so, according to the study this does not suffice and it should be more specific when making reference to children.

The researchers have also recommended the creation of a classification scheme according to user age and service theme like the one currently in place for video games: the Pan European Game Information (PEGI), which recommends games for children and youngsters of 3, 7, 12, 16 and over 18 years.

Recommendations to the Government

The study was conducted using surveys sent to companies, government agencies and child protection associations. Its results suggest that the Spanish Government needs to work with families and schools to promote awareness campaigns on proper mobile phone usage.

In addition, emphasis was placed on the need to reach an agreement with operators so that they can get the opinion of parents and incorporate filtering services. These would include access and download bans on pornographic photographs and videos, SMS and MMS sending restrictions, internet purchasing restrictions and bans on participation in contests and competitions.

"Up until now we thought we could control youngsters' access to the internet on the household desktop by locating it in a visible place, for example, and ensuring that children use the internet properly. But, smartphones have opened up new doors," warns De Miguel, who also highlights the recent advance of mobile applications (apps) and, above all, the use of social networks like Tuenti and Facebook amongst minors.

"One of the main problems is that children under the age of 14 can easily gain access despite it being prohibited under Spanish legislation," outlines the researcher. "As a result, the only available resource would be the electronic ID card, but its short term implementation is a long way away."

In any case, if the youngster is older than 14 and provides their real identity, "the social network is then both legally and socially responsible to offer more than enough protection so that the user can enjoy the site without problems."

The researchers are now appealing to social networks to implement measures such as closed profiles by default, the use of passwords and clearer information, as well as teaching youngsters how to use social networking sites and protect their privacy.

Elmo puppeteer quits show after new charges

Kevin Clash, the voice actor and puppeteer who made furry red Muppet Elmo famous, has resigned from "Sesame Street," Sesame Workshop said in a statement. The announcement came Tuesday, the same day that a second man alleged Clash had a sexual relationship with him when he was underage.

"Sesame Workshop?s mission is to harness the educational power of media to help all children the world over reach their highest potential," the statement read. "Kevin Clash has helped us achieve that mission for 28 years, and none of us, especially Kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization.

"Unfortunately, the controversy surrounding Kevin?s personal life has become a distraction that none of us want, and he has concluded that he can no longer be effective in his job and has resigned from 'Sesame Street.' This is a sad day for 'Sesame Street.'"

In the new lawsuit, filed Tuesday in New York, Cecil Singleton says he met Clash, then 32, in a gay chat room in 1993, when Singleton was 15, and they began a relationship.

Another man made similar charges earlier this month, and later recanted, saying he was of age when the relationship began. On Nov. 12, Clash, 52, took a leave of absence from the show following allegations of the first relationship.

That first man, now 24 and a college student, reached out to Sesame Workshop in June and said he was just 16 when he had a relationship with Clash. The company said in a statement that it investigated the relationship and found the charges that the man was underage to be "unsubstantiated," but that Clash was disciplined for using poor judgment and violating company Internet usage policy.

On Nov. 13, a Pennsylvania law firm representing the first man issued a statement saying their client had recanted his claim that the relationship began when he was underage, calling it an "adult consensual relationship" and saying the man would have no further comment.

"I am a gay man. I have never been ashamed of this or tried to hide it, but felt it was a personal and private matter," Clash said last week in a statement to NBC News issued through a representative. "I had a relationship with the accuser. It was between two consenting adults and I am deeply saddened that he is trying to characterize it as something other than what it was. I am taking a break from Sesame Workshop to deal with this false and defamatory allegation."

Clash has performed with Sesame Street characters since 1979, when he played Cookie Monster in the "Macy's?Thanksgiving Day?Parade." He became an official puppeteer on "Sesame Street" in 1984 and created character voices for puppets such as Baby Natasha and Dr. Nobel Price, but the marriage of Elmo and Clash's stylized high-pitched toddler voice caught fire once he began voicing the puppet in 1985. (Elmo had been a recurring puppet on the show since the early 1970s, but not a major player until Clash took over.)

Clash was the subject of?a 2011 documentary, "Being Elmo,"?which documented his lifelong love of puppeteering.

"Elmo is bigger than any one person and will continue to be an integral part of 'Sesame Street' to engage, educate and inspire children around the world," said Sesame Workshop when Clash took his earlier leave.

Money swindlers of ?Fresh Air? project started detaining

(Ref: sonin.mn, 12 Nov, 2012) The Millennium Challenge Foundation (MCF) implements big projects in Mongolia. ?Fresh Air? is one of the projects of the MCF. However, B.Batzorig Governor of Bayanzurkh District and other Heads of Khoroos (small units of the district) have allegedly misappropriated money along with staff of XAC Bank. Particularly, the Heads of Khoroos allegedly collected and copied ID Cards of residents. And then they allegedly prepared forged documents for Selge Dulaan LLC and misappropriated money along with staffs of XAC Bank. The investigators found out at the first stage that they allegedly misappropriated MNT 66 million from ?Fresh Air? project of the MCF by utilizing more than 120 citizens? documents. According to the project, there are totally 13,000 residents from 7 Khoroos in Bayanzurkh District involved. This case is being investigated by the State Investigation Office and some people related to this case was detained at No.461 Detention Centre.?

B.Nasanbat investigated by the Anti-Corruption Agency

According to source information, the ACA thinks that B.Nasanbat abused his power when he was formerly the Mining Director of Sharyn Gol JSC. Particularly, he is apparently being investigated for mining gold secretly and appropriating income into his own pocket. Moreover, he is suspected to have received a large amount of money from an Australian citizen for arranging a good position in the company.

Copper Steadies as Investors Await China?s Leadership Change
