RIM writes off value of tablet inventory

(AP) ? Research In Motion Ltd., the struggling maker of the BlackBerry phones, is writing off much of its inventory of PlayBook tablets, since it has to sell them at a deep discount.

The Canadian company on Friday said it's taking a pre-tax charge of $485 million in the just-ended quarter to account for the declining value of the tablets. The model originally priced at $500 now costs $200.

A year ago, co-CEO Jim Balsillie said pent-up interest in the PlayBook was "really overwhelming." Companies are looking for an equivalent of the iPad of corporate use, he said.

In March, Balsillie said "The launch of the PlayBook may well be the most significant development for RIM since the launch of the of the first BlackBerry device back in 1999."

But when the tablet went on sale in April, reviewers puzzled over the lack of email software, saying the device seemed half-baked. RIM now promises updated software in February.

RIM said it shipped 150,000 PlayBooks to stores and distributors in the fiscal third quarter, which ended Nov. 26. "Sell-through," or the number actually bought by users, was slightly higher, reflecting sales of tablets shipped earlier. It shipped 500,000 in the first quarter and 200,000 in the second.

RIM also said it sold 14.1 million BlackBerrys in the third quarter, slightly better than analysts expected. It then expects sales to fall slightly in the current quarter, roughly in line with analysts' expectations.

The company provided preliminary revenue and profit figures for the third quarter that were lower than it previously projected, but not a surprise to analysts.

RIM said it expects earnings at the "low to mid point" of the $1.20 to $1.40 per share it previously forecast. Analysts polled by FactSet have on average been expecting $1.18 per share.

The company expects revenue slightly the below the $5.3 billion to $5.6 billion in its previous forecast. Analysts had been expecting $5.27 billion, on average.

RIM shares fell $1.76, or 9.5 percent, to $16.82 in morning trading Friday. The stock hit a seven-year low of $15.98 last month.

The PlayBook charge comes as analysts have started to conclude that RIM's management has no chance of really righting the ship. They've started to value the company not on its future prospects, but on how much it would be worth if acquired, broken up, or simply run down while keeping BlackBerry service going.

The company is also taking a charge of $50 million for an embarrassing October outage of email and Web services that lasted days for millions of overseas BlackBerry users. It briefly spread to the U.S. and Canada before the company was able to contain the damage.

RIM reports fiscal third-quarter earnings on Dec. 15.

Galaxy win in Indonesia

updated 11:15 a.m. ET Nov. 30, 2011

JAKARTA, Indonesia - Robbie Keane scored in the 14th minute to give the Los Angeles Galaxy a 1-0 win over an Indonesian all-star team in the first exhibition game of the MLS champions' Asian tour.

Keane took a short pass from Adam Cristman inside the penalty area and slotted a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

The Galaxy also hit a post and the crossbar in the first half, but couldn't extend their lead.

David Beckham and Landon Donovan started for the Galaxy in front of about 30,000 spectators at Jakarta's 80,000-seat Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

The Galaxy will play the Philippines national team in Manila on Dec. 3 and Australian club Melbourne Victory three days later.

Mars life? New rover may uncover clues

For more than a decade, robotic probes sent to Mars have been searching for signs of past water, believed to be one of the key ingredients for life.

Now, NASA opens a new chapter in the search for extraterrestrial life with an ambitious mission to find life's habitats, and possibly even organics, on Mars.

"I'd be surprised if we landed on the surface (of Mars) and didn't find something that looked like it could have been a formerly habitable environment," said California Institute of Technology planetary scientist John Grotzinger, lead researcher for NASA's Mars Science Laboratory.

NEWS: Mars Rover Plutonium Triggers Launch Precautions

But what scientists really want to find is organic carbon ? molecules containing carbon that are derived from organic processes ? if indeed any has been preserved in the harsh Martian environment.

"It's a long shot, but we're going to try," Grotzinger told reporters during a pre-launch press conference.

It's been 35 years since NASA went looking for organics on Mars. Scientists didn't think the Viking lander twins, which touched down in 1976, found evidence of biological activity, though the results of one key experiment have been mired in controversy.

PHOTOS: When Discovery News Met Mars Rover 'Curiosity'

Mars Science Lab, nicknamed Curiosity, isn't a life-detection mission like Viking. Rather, it is intended to chemically analyze the landing site known as Gale Crater for habitats that could have supported life, or possibly still can.

WATCH VIDEO: New concepts for Mars-probing rovers would use Martian wind to move around the planet.

Curiosity follows three previous rovers ? Pathfinder, Spirit and Opportunity ? the lander Phoenix, and a fleet of orbiting probes that have focused on looking for signs of past water. The previous missions returned overwhelming evidence that Mars was once a warmer and wetter place and hints that the planet once sported an ocean, rivers and other bodies of water on its surface.

The question now is whether the water existed long enough for life to evolve and if there were other ingredients necessary for life, namely organic compounds, which are the building blocks for life on Earth.

ANALYSIS: New Mars Rover to Land at Gale Crater: Video

"One of the ingredients of life is water. We're now looking to see if we can find other conditions that are necessary for life by defining habitability or what does it take in the environment to support life," said Mary Voytek, director of NASA's astrobiology program.

The $2.5-billion rover is scheduled for launch at 10:02 a.m. EST Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

Its 60-million mile journey is expected to end in August 2012, with a touchdown inside the 96-mile wide Gale Crater. The site features a three-mile-high mountain of sediment that will be the focus of Curiosity's studies for at least two years.

White House chef serves up 'tradition, togetherness'

In a special Thanksgiving edition of PRESS Pass, White House assistant chef Sam Kass gave David an inside look at the first family's kitchen and talked about his special advisory role in the Obama administration. ?As the?senior policy adviser for healthy food initiatives, Kass has been a high-profile advocate for Michelle Obama?s "Let's Move!" campaign and other children?s health programs. His goal while in the administration is to have a ?transformative impact? on the health of the country, particularly children.?

Kass spoke with David Gregory about how much the White House should be involved in child nutrition, saying that in schools,??it?s clear we have a responsibility to ensure that there are good standards that are based on science.? But he admitted to being bewildered on one government food policy: Congress? decision that pizza can be called a vegetable.

"You're gonna have to ask [Congress] ... for the answer on that one," he said.?

Kass, who prepares everything from state dinners to the Obama family?s private meals, revealed what excites him most as a chef and talked about the rewards of cooking healthy from the First Lady?s garden. David also got some insight into the first family?s kitchen, where, Kass says, vegetables are non-negotiable and the Obama children have to fend for themselves when it comes to snacks.?

For the White House Thanksgiving, though, he says ?we just try to have fun.?

'Unhappy customer': 15 hurt after Black Friday melee

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and Associated Press

Updated 7:30 a.m. ET

Fifteen?Black Friday bargain-hunters suffered minor injuries at a crowded Wal-Mart store in Los Angeles late Thursday after an angry woman used pepper spray?when?shoppers?tried to cut in?line.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. PT (1:20?a.m. ET Friday)?in the San Fernando Valley as shoppers looking for deals were let inside the store.

Shawn Lenske, a Los Angeles fire department spokesman, said the injuries were due to "rapid crowd movement."

NBC News reported police said no more than 15 were hurt, 10 of them for the effects of inhalation of pepper spray.

Police Lt. Abel Parga said a woman used pepper spray, then left. Parga said police were looking for the woman and no arrests have been made.

?"It was an unhappy customer,'' he said.

A witness told Los Angeles' NBC4?that the incident started as people waited in line for the new Xbox 360.

Stores are opening earlier than ever and the mad dash for Christmas bargains is already on, and retailers are desperate for shoppers' business. NBC's John Yang reports from Chicago's Magnificent Mile.

The witness said a woman with two children in tow became upset with the way people were pushing in line. The witness said the woman pulled out pepper spray and sprayed the other people.

NBC News?quoted a police officer?as saying the flare-up was triggered when a crowd rushed toward merchandise following a "big reveal" of?items that had been hidden by draping.

NYT: Friday's deals may not be the best

One section of the store was cleared while patients were treated and the pepper spray dissipated, Parga said. People were seen pouring out of the store, but customers were allowed back in to continue shopping.

The dispute came as as stores opened their doors at midnight ? a few hours earlier than they normally do on the most anticipated shopping day of the year.

msnbc.com graphic: Black Friday holiday shopping stats

Herald Square in New York was bustling at 6 p.m. ET Thursday, the Associated Press reported, with shoppers looking to snag discounts at Old Navy and other stores that were open on the Thanksgiving. By 9:45 p.m. ET, more than 300 people were waiting outside a Best Buy in New York before it opened at midnight. An hour later, nearly 2,000 were in line at another Best Buy in St. Petersburg, Florida, ahead of its midnight opening.

'Spend sooner'
Retailers hope the earlier openings will make Black Friday shopping more convenient for Americans who are more likely to be worried about high unemployment and the other challenges they face in the weak economy.

Black Friday is important to merchants because it kicks off the holiday shopping season, a time when they can make 25 to 40 percent of their annual revenue. It's expected that shoppers will spend nearly $500 billion during the holiday shopping season, or about 3 percent more than they did last year.

PhotoBlog: Black Friday shopping starts on Thursday

"It's a good move to try to get shoppers to spend sooner, before they run out of money," says Burt Flickinger, III, president of retail consultancy Strategic Resource Group.

About 34 percent of consumers plan to shop on Black Friday, up from 31 percent last year, according to the International Council of Shopping Centers, and 16 percent had planned to shop on Thanksgiving Day itself. For the weekend, 152 million people are expected shop, up from 138 million last year.

A Texas couple is set to tie the knot after meeting three years ago while waiting in a Black Friday shopping line at Target. KXAS-TV's Amanda Guerra reports.

Update at 5:45a.m. ET: Authorities say gunfire erupted at a North Carolina mall as holiday shoppers gathered, the Associated Press reported.

The Cumberland County Sheriff's Office said detectives were looking for two suspects after gunfire rang out at Cross Creek Mall in Fayetteville early Friday. No injuries were reported.

The first shots were fired around 2 a.m. outside the mall near a food court entrance. Investigators say several more shots were fired after one of the suspects ran inside the mall.

Update at 7:30a.m. ET: NBC affiliate KNTV is reporting a shooting at a parking lot at a Wal-Mart in San Leandro, California. Police have not said if the shooting was shopping related, or a random act of violence.

(AP) ? A jetpack-wearing monkey and a freakish creation from filmmaker Tim Burton are two of the big new balloons that will make their inaugural appearances in front of millions of people at this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Paul Frank's Julius and Burton's B. join over a dozen other giant balloons, including fan favorites like Snoopy and Spider-Man, for Thursday's parade.

Macy's parade also is expected to feature more than 40 other balloon creations, 27 floats, 800 clowns and 1,600 cheerleaders. Organizers say Mary J. Blige, Cee Lo Green, Avril Lavigne and the Muppets of Sesame Street will participate, some taking the stage at the end of the route in Herald Square and others performing on floats.

Macy's says 3.5 million people will likely crowd the Manhattan parade route, while an additional 50 million watch from home.

National Weather Service meteorologist Tim Morrin said a storm was expected to speed away by morning, leaving mostly sunny skies and 10 mph winds, well below city guidelines for grounding balloons.

Parade spokeswoman Holly Thomas said officials were monitoring the weather.

"The flight of our giant character balloons is based on real conditions about an hour before the parade begins and not advance forecasts," she said in an email. "There is no indication in any current weather models that the flight of these balloons will be affected."

The parade begins at 77th Street and heads south on Central Park West to Seventh Avenue, before moving to Sixth Avenue and ending at Macy's Herald Square.

The parade got its start in 1924 and included live animals such as camels, goats and elephants. It was not until 1927 that the live animals were replaced by giant helium balloons. The parade was suspended from 1942 to 1944 because rubber and helium were needed for World War II.

Since the beginning, the balloons have been based on popular cultural characters and holiday themes. Returning favorites this year include Buzz Lightyear, Clumsy Smurf, SpongeBob SquarePants and Kermit the Frog.

Also making their first appearances at this year's parade are a pair of bike-powered balloons, one featuring a bulldog character and an elf balloon designed by Queens resident Keith Lapinig, who won a nationwide contest.

All the balloons are created at Macy's Parade Studio, and each undergoes testing for flight patterns, aerodynamics, buoyancy and lift.

The helium giants were inflated Wednesday across the street from the western side of Central Park. Thousands of people, many families with children in tow, were drawn to the spectacle of the balloons lying as if asleep on the streets, held down by weighted nets.

Standing in front of the famed Snoopy balloon, lying on its side, 8-year-old Emilio Rios said he was glad that there was something to keep the helium giant from getting away.

"Otherwise, it would float up to space, and aliens would see it," he said. "They would be the ones with the parade."

Nine-year-old Lindsay Ravetz said she loved seeing all the characters.

"It's just, like, cool," she said.

It was cool even for many of the adults. Leslie McCarthy, who said she's over 60, has been attending the parade since she was a little girl. And the excitement of seeing the big balloons hasn't worn off.

"I used to think this parade was put on for me," the Brooklyn resident said.

Dominican authorities probe US bomb plot suspect (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Dominican authorities said Tuesday they are investigating the background of an immigrant accused of plotting to attack police stations and post offices in New York.

Police Chief Jose Armando Polanco said the investigation is ongoing even though suspect Jose Pimentel Sosa left the Dominican Republic at a young age and has no criminal past in the Caribbean country.

U.S. authorities have said that Pimentel, who faces terrorism-related charges, is an "al-Qaida sympathizer" who converted to Islam in 2004 and went by the name Muhammad Yusuf. He was born in the Dominican Republic but lived most of his life in Manhattan.

His father, Juan Jose Pimentel, told Dominican TV News SIN that he believes his son is innocent and the victim of bad luck.

"They want to set an example with terrorism (charges)," he said, referring to New York authorities.

He said that Pimentel changed when he got divorced about two years ago.

"He became a recluse, he was depressed," he said.

Pimentel last visited the Dominican Republic in 2007.

New York authorities said Pimentel was overheard talking about attacking police patrol cars and postal facilities, killing soldiers returning home from abroad and bombing a police station in Bayonne, New Jersey.

Egypt Cabinet offers to resign but protests go on (AP)

CAIRO ? Egypt's civilian Cabinet offered to resign Monday after three days of violent clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Tahrir Square, but the action failed to satisfy protesters deeply frustrated with the new military rulers.

The Health Ministry and a doctor at an improvised field hospital on the square said at least 26 people have been killed and 1,750 wounded in the latest violence as activists sought to fill the streets for a "second revolution" to force out the generals who have failed to stabilize the country, salvage the economy or bring democracy.

Throughout the day, young protesters demanding the military hand over power to a civilian government fought with black-clad police, hurling stones and firebombs and throwing back the tear gas canisters being fired by police into the square, which was the epicenter of the movement that ousted authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak.

By midnight tens of thousands of protesters were in the huge downtown square.

The clashes have deepened the disarray among Egypt's political ranks, with the powerful Muslim Brotherhood balking at joining in the demonstrations, fearing that turmoil will disrupt elections next week that the Islamists expect to dominate.

The protests in Tahrir and elsewhere across this nation of some 85 million people have forced the ruling military council as well as the Cabinet it backs into two concessions, but neither were significant enough to send anyone home.

The council issued an anti-graft law that bans anyone convicted of corruption from running for office or holding a government post, a move that is likely to stop senior members from the Mubarak regime from running for public office.

Hours later, the Cabinet of Prime Minister Essam Sharaf submitted its resignation to the council, a move that was widely expected given the government's perceived inefficiency and its almost complete subordination to the generals.

Protesters cheered and shouted "God is great!" when the news arrived of the Cabinet resignation offer, but they almost immediately resumed their chant of "The people want to topple the field marshal" ? a reference to military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi.

"We are not clearing the square until there is a national salvation government that is representative and has full responsibility," said activist Rami Shaat, who was at the site.

The council released a statement late Monday calling for a national dialogue to "urgently study the reasons for the current crisis and ways to overcome it."

The statement, carried by Egypt's state news agency, said the military deeply regrets the loss of life and has ordered the Justice Ministry to form a committee to investigate the incidents of the past few days. The military said it ordered security forces to take measures that would protect demonstrators, who have the right to peaceful protest.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said the United States was deeply concerned about the violence and urged restraint on all sides so Egypt could proceed with a timely transition to democracy.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also deplored the loss of life and called on authorities "to guarantee the protection of human rights and civil liberties for all Egyptians, including the right to peaceful protest," U.N. spokesman Martin Nesirky said.

Amnesty International harshly criticized the military rulers in a new report, saying they have "completely failed to live up their promises to Egyptians to improve human rights."

The London-based group documented steps by the military that have fallen short of increasing human rights and in some cases have made matters worse than under Mubarak.

"The euphoria of the uprising has been replaced by fears that one repressive rule has simply been replaced with another," according to the report, issued Tuesday.

The report called for repeal of the Mubarak-era "emergency laws," expanded to cover "thuggery" and criticizing the military. It said the army has placed arbitrary restrictions on media and other outlets.

Egyptian security forces have continued to use torture against demonstrators, the report said, and some 12,000 civilians have been tried in military trials, which it called "unfair."

In many ways, the protests in Tahrir bore a striking resemblance to the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak. The chants are identical, except that Tantawi's name has replaced Mubarak's.

"The people want the execution of the marshal," protesters screamed Monday. The hallmark chant of "erhal," or "leave," that once was aimed at Mubarak is now meant for Tantawi, his defense minister for 20 years.

Some of the protesters demanded that the generals immediately step down in favor of a presidential civilian council.

"If the military steps down, then who will be left to run the country until elections are held?" said Ahmed Fathy, a 27-year-old dentist who prefers a date for the handover rather than the departure of the military now. "The military can strike back by turning the nation against us."

About 5,000 to 7,000 protesters were in Tahrir Square for most of the day but the number rose to around 30,000 after nightfall ? nowhere near filling it but displaying the strength of the movement despite the military's tireless campaign to marginalize the youths who drove Mubarak from office. Protesters also marched in other cities, including thousands of students in the coastal city of Alexandria.

Unlike in January and February when the demonstrators were united against Mubarak, the latest protests reflect political divisions and Egypt's growing economic hardships and tenuous security.

Islamists led by the Muslim Brotherhood, the country's largest and best-organized political group, are not taking part in the protests this time, a stand that has been widely seen as motivated by a desire not to get involved in anything that could disturb parliamentary elections that are due to start Nov. 28 and conclude in March.

But the Brotherhood, whose supporters gave muscle to the protesters in January and February, may have underestimated the appeal of the secular-minded activists and the depth of anger over the military rulers' failings and the inefficiency of the Cabinet that the generals support.

To many of the protesters, the Brotherhood and its allies, mainly the ultraconservative Salafis, are more keen on winning parliamentary seats than the future of the nation.

That so many protesters are in Tahrir Square without the participation of the Islamists could provide the liberal pro-reform groups with a boost that would fuel their movement in the face of the military's perceived intransigence.

"We don't need them," Zeinab Kheir, a lawyer and an activist, said referring to the Brotherhood, vilified by many activists as an opportunistic, self-serving group.

"We want the (military) council to leave immediately so we can continue our revolution, which the military sold out," said Mohammed Ali, a shoemaker among the protesters. "A civilian Cabinet from the square is what we want."

The divisions between the secularists and Islamists surfaced in the square Monday when senior Brotherhood leader Mohammed el-Beltagy was heckled by protesters who threw water bottles at him. He hurriedly left.

However, moderate Islamists from two groups ? the Wasat, or Centrist party, and supporters of presidential hopeful Abdel-Monaem Abul Fetouh ? said they would take part in a big protest dubbed "National Salvation" planned for Tuesday.

Throughout the day, the sounds of gunfire crackled around Tahrir Square, and a constant stream of injured protesters ? bloodied from rubber bullets or overcome by tear gas ? were brought on motorbikes into makeshift clinics on sidewalks, where volunteer doctors scrambled from patient to patient.

A morgue official said the toll had climbed to 24 dead since the violence began Saturday ? a jump from the toll of five dead around nightfall Sunday, reflecting the ferocity of fighting. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to release the numbers.

Since Mubarak fell and the military took over, Egypt's revolution has been mired in frustration and confusion. Activists and many in the public accuse the generals of seeking to hold on to power, and they fear that the military will dominate the next government no matter who wins the election. Many Egyptians are also frustrated by the failure of the military and the caretaker government to conduct any real reforms, halt widespread insecurity or salvage a rapidly worsening economy.

The military says it will hand over power only after presidential elections, which it has vaguely said will be held in late 2012 or early 2013.

On Monday, a group of 133 diplomats from the Foreign Ministry took the rare step of issuing a petition demanding that the military commit to hold presidential elections and transfer power by 2012.

"What does it mean, transfer power in 2013? It means simply that he wants to hold on to his seat," said protester Mohammed Sayyed, referring to Tantawi.

Sayyed carried two rocks as he took cover from tear gas in a sidestreet off Tahrir Square. He wore a bandage on his head after being hit by what he said was a rubber bullet.

"I will keep coming back until they kill me," he said. "The people are frustrated. Nothing changed for the better."

Passive Occupy protesters take pepper spray blast (AP)

SAN FRANCISCO ? Protesters sitting on the ground supporting the Occupy Wall Street movement on the campus of the University of California, Davis took a face full of pepper spray at close range from an officer in riot gear in an incident that was captured on cellphone video and spread virally across the Internet Saturday.

UC Davis Chancellor Linda Katehi described the video images as "chilling" and said she was forming a task force to investigate even as a faculty group called for her resignation because of the Friday police action.

However, a law enforcement official who watched the clip called the use of force "fairly standard police procedure."

In the video, an officer dispassionately pepper-sprays a line of several sitting protesters who flinch and cover their faces but remain passive with their arms interlocked as onlookers shriek and scream out for the officer to stop.

"The use of the pepper spray as shown on the video is chilling to us all and raises many questions about how best to handle situations like this," Chancellor Linda Katehi said in a message posted on the school's website Saturday.

The protest was held in support of the overall Occupy Wall Street movement and in solidarity with protesters at the University of California, Berkeley who were jabbed by police with batons on Nov. 9.

The UC Davis video images, which were circulated on YouTube and widely elsewhere online, prompted immediate outrage among faculty and students, with the Davis Faculty Association saying in a letter Saturday that Katehi should resign.

"The Chancellor's role is to enable open and free inquiry, not to suppress it," the faculty association said in its letter.

It called Katehi's authorization of police force a "gross failure of leadership."

At a news conference later on Saturday, Katehi said what the video shows is "sad and really very inappropriate." The events surrounding the protest have been hard on her personally, but she had no plans to resign, she said.

"I do not think that I have violated the policies of the institution. I have worked personally very hard to make this campus a safe campus for all," she said.

Katehi remained in a media room for more than two hours after the news conference, eventually walking to an SUV past a silent group of students nearly three blocks long, many of them holding up signs calling for her to step down, the Sacramento Bee said.

The statewide Council of UC Faculty Associations issued a statement Saturday saying "We are outraged that the administrations of UC campuses are using police brutality to suppress dissent, free speech and peaceful assembly."

Charles J. Kelly, a former Baltimore Police Department lieutenant who wrote the department's use of force guidelines, said pepper spray is a "compliance tool" that can be used on subjects who do not resist, and is preferable to simply lifting protesters.

"When you start picking up human bodies, you risk hurting them," Kelly said. "Bodies don't have handles on them."

After reviewing the video, Kelly said he observed at least two cases of "active resistance" from protesters. In one instance, a woman pulls her arm back from an officer. In the second instance, a protester curls into a ball. Each of those actions could have warranted more force, including baton strikes and pressure-point techniques.

"What I'm looking at is fairly standard police procedure," Kelly said.

Images of police actions have served to galvanize support during the Occupy Wall Street movement, from the clash between protesters and police in Oakland last month that left an Iraq War veteran with serious injuries to more recent skirmishes in New York City, San Diego, Denver and Portland, Ore.

The forcible Oakland protest eviction, the first of its kind on a large scale, marred the national reputation of the city's mayor and police department while rallying encampments nationwide beset with their own public safety and sanitation issues.

Police chiefs and mayors held conference calls to discuss containment strategies in the days after the Oct. 25 Oakland eviction. The use of rubber bullets and tear gas dropped off, though police departments have turned to pepper spray when trying to quell large crowds.

Some of the most notorious instances went viral online, including the use of pepper spray on an 84-year-old activist in Seattle and a group of women in New York. Seattle's mayor apologized to the activist, and the New York Police Department official shown using pepper spray on the group of women lost 10 vacation days after an internal review.

In the video of the UC Davis protest, the officer, a member of the UC Davis police force, displays a bottle before spraying its contents on the seated protesters in a sweeping motion while walking back and forth. Most of the protesters have their heads down, but several were hit directly in the face.

Some members of a crowd gathered at the scene scream and cry out. The crowd then chants, "Shame on You," as the protesters on the ground are led away. The officers retreat minutes later with helmets on and batons drawn.

Ten people were arrested.

University spokeswoman Karen Nikos said nine people hit by pepper spray were treated at the scene. Another two were taken to hospitals and later released.

Nikos declined to release the identity of the officer in the video.

At Saturday's news conference, UC Davis Police Chief Annette Spicuzza said the decision to use pepper spray was made at the scene.

"The students had encircled the officers," she said. "They needed to exit. They were looking to leave but were unable to get out."

Many Twitter and Facebook comments supported the students and criticized the response.

"Stomach churning video of police using pepper spray on seated anti-Wall Street protesters in Davis, Calif.," actress Mia Farrow wrote in a retweet of the video.

Elsewhere in California on Saturday, several hundred protesters in Oakland tore down a chain-link fence surrounding a city-owned vacant lot and began setting up a new encampment.

The Occupy Oakland protesters breached the fence and poured into the lot next to the Fox Theater on Telegraph Avenue, police said in a statement.

The protesters passed a line of police surrounding the lot without a struggle, used wire cutters to take down the fence and pulled down "no trespassing" signs the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

Police removed the main Occupy Oakland encampment five blocks away Monday at City Hall, and Oakland officials said they won't tolerate new camps.

"They obviously don't want us at the plaza downtown. We might as well make this space useful," Chris Skantz, 23, told the Chronicle.

Police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said surrounding streets had been closed and officers were protecting surrounding buildings.

Watson said there had been no arrests or citations, but the city's position remains that the protesters can't stay overnight.

Police did not give their immediate plans for the site or say how or when they planned to move on the new camp.

One nearby resident expressed unhappiness about the new site.

"I supported Occupy Oakland," Sherbeam Wright told the Chronicle. "At this point I don't know what they stand for anymore."

Tablet computers passe? Here come ultrabooks.

Tablet computers were ubiquitous at CES 2011, thanks to iPad. Ultrabooks will be featured at CES 2012, thanks to MacBook Air. But 100 tablet computers are expected to debut.

Tablet computers were everywhere during CES 2011, following the success of the iPad, but come next year, thin and light Ultrabooks will likely be hogging the spotlight (yes, following the success of the MacBook Air).

Between 30 and 50 different Ultrabooks will be featured on the CES 2012 show floor in Las Vegas, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) revealed during a press event in London today.

As?PC Pro notes, the news comes as a bit of surprise since we?ve only seen a few manufacturers announce Ultrabooks so far, including?Asus,?Acer,?HP?and?Toshiba. Other PC manufacturers are expected to be waiting for the?new Intel Ivy Bridge 22-nanometer processors, which will be released some time next year, before stepping into the Ultrabook arena.

Intel, not surprisingly, is?heavily hyping Ultrabooks, which are pretty much direct rivals to Apple?s MacBook Air. In August,?Intel announced that it was creating a $300 million Ultrabook fund?to encourage manufacturers to develop the ultrathin laptops.

But if you?re somehow not sick of tablets yet, don?t fret: CEA director of research Shawn DuBravac said there will still be plenty of tablets during this year?s CES. Around 100 (!) tablets were announced at the last CES, and he expects a similar number come January.

Because that?s what the world needs, another 100 look-alike tablets.

Syria's Assad vows to continue crackdown

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was quoted on Saturday as saying he would press on with a crackdown against anti-government unrest in his country despite increased pressure from the Arab League to end it.

"The conflict will continue and the pressure to subjugate Syria will continue," he told Britain's Sunday Times newspaper. "However, I assure you that Syria will not bow down and that it will continue to resist the pressure being imposed on it."

In video footage on the newspaper's website, Assad said there would be elections in February or March when Syrians would vote for a parliament to create a new constitution and that would include provision for a presidential ballot.

"That constitution will set the basis of how to elect a president, if they need a president or don't need him," he said. "They have the elections, they can participate in it. The ballot boxes will decide who should be president."

The Arab League, a powerful political group of Arab states, set a deadline on Saturday for Syria to comply with a peace plan, involving a military pullout from around restive areas, and threatened sanctions if Assad failed to halt the violence.

Story: Syrian troops attack despite Arab peace plan

However, activists from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 12 civilians were killed in raids by government forces on Saturday while two army defectors died when they clashed with the army in Homs, which has become a center of armed revolt against more than 40 years of Assad family rule.

Asked if his forces had been too aggressive, Assad told the newspaper mistakes had been made but these were the fault of individuals, not the state.

"We, as a state, do not have a policy to be cruel with citizens," he said.

The United Nations says 3,500 people have been killed during the crackdown on the protests which began in March, but Assad disputed this and put the number killed at 619. He told the paper that 800 government forces had been killed.

'Daily obsession'
"My role as president ? this is my daily obsession now ? is to know how to stop this bloodshed caused by armed terrorist acts that are hitting some areas," he said.

Syria has come under growing international pressure to stop the crackdown. Britain, a strong critic of Damascus, said on Friday senior figures including Foreign Secretary William Hague would meet Syrian opposition representatives in London next week.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has expressed fear that Syria could be slipping into civil war but said the international community was reluctant to intervene as it had in Libya.

Assad said the Arab League's intervention could provide a pretext for Western military action and repeated a past statement that such a move against Syria would create an "earthquake" across the Middle East.

"If they are logical, rational and realistic, they shouldn't do it because the repercussions are very dire. Military intervention will destabilize the region as a whole, and all countries will be affected," he told the Sunday Times.

The newspaper said Assad had promised to personally fight and die to resist foreign forces.

Assad also vowed to prevent further attacks by the Free Syrian Army, which opposition sources said had killed or wounded at least 20 security police in an assault on an Air Force Intelligence Complex near Damascus two days ago.

"The only way is to search for the armed people, chase the armed gangs, prevent the entry of arms and weapons from neighboring countries, prevent sabotage and enforce law and order," he told the paper.

Gratitude that heals

A Christian Science perspective.

For years I had no working concept of God, at least not one that satisfied my yearning and yet was answerable to reason. The anthropomorphic God of my childhood had stopped seeming credible to me once I reached high school. I searched world religions and philosophies for decades until finally settling into an uneasy truce with this apparently unknown and inaccessible being.

Then the tragic loss of a friend shattered this standoff, and the timeless question of why bad things happen to good people demanded an answer. During this time another friend shared some thoughts about God as not someone who had to be pleased or appeased, but as infinite, divine Love, as Principle. And I realized that a God that is pure Love and unchanging Principle does not force tragedy upon us, but rather rescues us from it. And this concept of God became alive and meaningful to me. This understanding of God restored my faith in good, and for that I am deeply grateful.

I certainly have many reasons to feel grateful, which I celebrate quietly in my own thought, and by directly thanking those for whom I am grateful. I am often awed and humbled by stories about kind and selfless acts done on behalf of others, sometimes by persons unknown. And there must be thousands upon thousands of good deeds, both untold and unacknowledged, occurring daily.

So Thanksgiving Day to me has always seemed like the most important of holidays, a day in which to step back and acknowledge all the good in the world, obvious or not.

How does one do that? I learned a good lesson about this from a friend who was healed in childhood more than 50 years ago of a crippling disease through Christian Science treatment. She?d been asked by a Christian Science practitioner who was praying for her to take inventory of everything she could think of to be grateful for. One item that stood out from her list was the ?sidewalk outside her window? because even though she couldn?t walk on it, other people could. And so she was grateful on their behalf.

I can only guess what else showed up on my friend?s list, and I recall her saying it became a very long list indeed. She improved until all evidence of the ailment disappeared, never to return. But the gratitude and the simple practice of acknowledging it has remained with her to this day.

Mary Baker Eddy, who discovered Christian Science, wrote, ?Are we really grateful for the good already received? Then we shall avail ourselves of the blessings we have, and thus be fitted to receive more? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 3). These ideas remind me to take inventory of all the blessings in my life, great and small; to acknowledge good; and to expect the continuation of good.

So every day I add to my own gratitude list. At the top of that list is my gratitude for the reawakening in my awareness of the presence of God, always with me. And on Thanksgiving I gratefully acknowledge, in the timeless words of George Washington?s original Thanksgiving Proclamation, ?that great and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be.?

Blue Origin spruces up its rocket report

Blue Origin's prototype rocket ship rises from its pad for a "short hop" flight test in May. Click on the image for the videos from Blue Origin's website.

By Alan Boyle

Blue Origin, the secretive rocket venture founded by Amazon.com billionaire Jeff Bezos, has unveiled a spruced-up website that includes videos of its?successful "short hop" flight test back in May.

However, there's no new information about the crash of its PM-2 prototype in?August, which came at the end of an ambitious supersonic tryout.?Bezos acknowledged the crash a week after it happened in an online update, and said?his team was already working on a new?prototype.?In Thursday's update, he made no mention of August's setback or the?state of the?development effort.

"We?ve received requests for video of the short hop test flight that took place earlier this year. Here are two videos of the flight," Bezos wrote. "Enjoy!"

Blue Origin

A diagram shows the configuration for a prototype New Shepard suborbital space vehicle.

The two videos show the PM-2 rising from the launch pad at Bezos' spaceport in West Texas, then easing back down to earth with engines blazing and dust flying. One video provides a fisheye view from near the launch pad, and the other video was taken with a handheld camera from a remote location.

Thursday's update is part of a redesigned website that lays out Blue Origin's spaceflight plans and highlights the venture's employment opportunities (including 14 "immediate openings" and a summer internship program).

Blue Origin

This diagram shows the design for Blue Origin's booster system, with an orbital space capsule sitting on top of the stack at left.

Blue Origin intends to field?a suborbital space vehicle known as New Shepard, which could take on tourists?as well as?researchers and their experiments. It's also working on an orbital space capsule capable of taking astronauts to the International Space Station. For orbital missions,?Blue Origin has said it intends to use expendable Atlas 5 rockets at first but will eventually?switch to?its own reusable first-stage?booster and upper stage.

The upgraded website provides more details about the suborbital as well as the orbital effort, including?diagrams of the?space vehicles?and the "Cabin Payload Bays" that will hold experiments.

"The technical challenges of escaping Earth?s gravity well and reaching orbit have never been trivial, and are compounded when higher reliability and lower cost are required," Blue Origin says.?"We are working patiently, step by step, to reach these long-term goals."

Over the past couple of years, NASA has set aside $25.7 million to support work on?Blue Origin's?orbital vehicle. Three other companies ? the Boeing Co., Sierra Nevada Corp. and SpaceX ? are currently receiving higher levels of support for similar spaceship development efforts. All four companies say they can have their orbital spaceships ready for NASA's use by around the middle of the decade, assuming that they continue to receive development?funding from the space agency.

Earl Martin Phalen: Senator Reed and the Importance of Reading

Since 2002, Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed has championed Reach Out and Read in the United States Senate, fighting for our funding and lobbying for our cause. Despite the challenges of a tight economy -- and competing priorities -- Reed has never lost sight of the importance of preparing our nation's children for success in school.

Recently, I had the chance to sit down with the Senator and ask him about his passion for early literacy and reading. This Thanksgiving, Reach Out and Read is thankful for Senator Jack Reed.

Earl: Why literacy? Why is this the cause you support so strongly in the Senate?

Senator Reed: Literacy is the foundation for learning -- not just in school but for lifelong learning. When kids love to read they have a better chance to succeed. Helping young people learn to read is one of the most important things in terms of getting them on the right path, and helping them develop the skills they'll need to be successful throughout their lives.

Senator Grassley (R-IA) and I introduced the Prescribe a Book Act, which is modeled on the successful Reach Out and Read program, to enlist doctors and nurses in the effort to promote early literacy and better reading habits. So when mom or dad brings their little one in for a checkup, they get medical care -- along with a free book for their child and a reminder from the doctor about the importance of reading. When parents hear directly from doctors how important it is to read their children, they tend to pay attention.

Earl: You sit on the Senate Appropriations Committee, and have a firsthand view of how our country is funding literacy and education initiatives. Are we moving in the right direction?

Senator Reed: We are in a difficult budget-cutting environment and literacy programs, like a lot of other worthy programs, have taken a hit. For Fiscal Year 2011, there was no direct federal funding for literacy -- no funding for school libraries, no funding for book distribution such as through Reading is Fundamental and Reach Out and Read, and no funding to support comprehensive literacy instruction at the state and local levels. This was clearly the wrong direction for our students and for our future.

Fortunately, the Senate Appropriations Committee is trying to correct this and has provided funds in its Fiscal Year 2012 bill for competitive grants to support these activities. Unfortunately, the House has not proposed any funding for literacy. This is one of many spending issues that we will have to resolve in the weeks ahead. Investing in literacy programs is something that really pays off and will prepare our children to compete in the growing global economy.

Earl: There is a vibrant Reach Out and Read program in your home state of Rhode Island that serves more than 32,000 children -- or 61 percent of those between the ages of birth and five. Why is Reach Out and Read so important to you? Why is it so critical for parents to be engaged in their children's learning from the start?

Senator Reed: We know the stubborn achievement gaps that we see in our schools begin before children arrive as kindergarteners. Reach Out and Read can give parents the tools and confidence to support their children's education from the very beginning. Parents understand that learning and literacy are part of healthy child development. It's all about encouraging an early foundation for successful schooling.

Earl: You have a strong military background, both from your education at West Point and your time in the Army. Reach Out and Read is currently working to expand our Military Initiative to serve more and more families who serve our nation. Why is it especially important to offer this reading support to military families? What can books offer children who are faced with stress and anxiety due to a parent in the military?

Senator Reed: Our military families make many sacrifices. It is especially tough for families with very young children, which is why the services offered through Reach Out and Read are so important. A child sitting on a parent's lap with a book feels safe, secure, and loved. People have always used stories and books as a way to talk about, work through, and even get a break from stress and anxiety.

Reach Out and Read carefully selects books that are tailored to the needs of military families and can help reassure kids who may be nervous about their mom or dad getting set to deploy. They also offer encouragement and reinforcements to a parent who may be struggling with the kids while their spouse is overseas. We have heard a lot of positive feedback from the military and military families, and I am proud to have secured $1.1 million to help Reach Out and Read expand its Military Initiative.

2011-11-18-jackreed3.jpg
Courtesy of Senator Reed's office

Earl: As a graduate of both Harvard's Kennedy School of Government and Law School, education has clearly been a priority in your life. Growing up, was there an emphasis on reading in your home? When did you discover your own love of reading?

Senator Reed: I was fortunate to have wonderful parents who put a great emphasis on education. My father was a custodian at a local elementary school. And even though my parents weren't very wealthy, they went out and bought for us our own complete set of Encyclopedia Britannica. I spent my grammar school years reading it, particularly the sections that had anything connected to the military. Then my aunt would go out and buy me books every Christmas. She bought me an illustrated history of the Second World War and I just started reading it and reading it.

I remember going to the Auburn Public Library in Cranston, Rhode Island and checking books out and reading. So, yes, reading in my family was fundamental!

Earl: Now, as a parent, what are your reading rituals in the Reed household? What are your favorite books to read with your daughter, Emily?

Senator Reed: I read every night to my daughter before I put her to bed. And, we read all sorts of books. We read a lot of stories about princesses and right now the "Olivia" series is one of her favorites. We read about everything. She's got lots and lots of books. Her room is literally full of books.
