Finches

Finches

There are a lot of options of bird species that it can be overwhelming to choose just one?or a few as pets. It all depends on what you are looking for in a pet bird, the time you can allot to caring for them, and your budget. Pet birds come in a range of sizes, colors, personalities, and price. Some birds require more care and maintenance than others.

Always buy from a reputable bird breeder or bird store. Make sure the birds are healthy, and do some research to find out if you can provide their daily requirements since some may be too much to handle for a beginner.

Common bird species for beginner hobbyists:

Finches ? these birds do not care much for being handled, although they are charming creatures. They are fast, lively, and flashy, and will provide you an entertaining view because they are always twittering. They flourish in a social atmosphere and it is best to keep a pair or more in a cage. They do need plenty of room in their cage to avoid territorial aggression and to stretch their wings. Take note that finches usually fly to where they want to go and they do not climb for exercise.

Budgerigars ? these are also called ?budgies? and are one of the most common choices for a pet bird for beginners. They are almost always available and are not expensive. They are affectionate, have charming personalities, and some can be taught to talk. They also come in a wide range of colors. Budgies can develop a close bond with their human companions, including children. Remember to buy from a reputable breeder since this breed is often mass-produced and birds under those conditions are not as tame and may be more prone to diseases.

Quaker parakeets ? these are usually green and silvery. They are quite active and love to vocalize. Some of them can be easily taught how to talk and whistle various tunes. If they are socialized at a young age, they will not mind being handled. Take note that these birds are illegal in some states because they are considered a threat to local agriculture. Look into the restrictions in your area before deciding to keep them as pets.

Peach-faced lovebirds ? these are active, playful, and beautiful birds. They are usually well-socialized and can develop a strong bond with you. They require daily socialization and will not thrive if left alone in a cage. If you hand-raise them, they will not mind being carried around and will even perch on your shoulder. They are affectionate, not at all loud, and can also be trained to mimic sounds such as words.
